Lou & Gib Reese Ice Arena offers a wide range of Learn-to-Skate classes in a fun and relaxed environment for skaters of all skill levels. The Learn-to-Skate program is divided into several comprehensive levels, based on the Ice Skating Institute guidelines and standards. Professional instructors will conduct classes in a positive atmosphere, providing quality instruction and motivation for recreational, hockey and figure skaters of all ages.
Class Descriptions
Tot 1/2/Advanced
Designed for skaters ages 3-5, who are independent and can participate in a class setting. The most elementary skating skills are combined with fun andgames to build confidence and to have fun.
Pre-Alpha (Beginner)
Designed for skaters age 6 and older who have never skated, have very little skating experience or never had organized lessons.
Alpha ( 1 & 2 Advanced Beginner)
Designed for skaters age 6 and older who have had at least one series of lessons, or equivalent. Skaters must be able to glide on each foot, and will learn the fundamentals of forward skating, crossovers, stopping and will be introduced to backward skating.
Beta (Intermediate)
Designed for skaters age 6 and older who are proficient at forward skating and stopping. Skaters will learn the fundamentals of backward skating, crossovers, T-stops, and will be introduced to turning from forward to backward.
Gamma-Delta (Advanced Intermediate)
Designed for more advanced skater who are proficient at forward and backward skating. Curriculum includes turning from forward to backward, basic edges forward and backward, introduction to freestyle jumps and spins.
Adult Class
Designed for ages 18 and up to meet the needs and goals of beginner adult skaters as well as experienced skaters. Both hockey and figure skating basic skills will be covered.
Home School
This class is for skaters of all levels. We will teach you the basics of learning to skate. See Home School Flyer
Ice Dancing
Similar to ball room dancing, but on the ice! Learn the tango and waltz! This is designed for experienced skaters who have passed the Adult Intermediate Class, ISI Alpha Class or are proficient at forward skating and stopping.
Fundamentals in Figure Skating (Advanced)
Freestyle 1 to 10
Designed for skaters who have passed the ISI Delta or permission from Skating Director. Jumps, Spins, Power Skating, Edge Class, Ice Dancing and Skating a program to music will be included. 60 Minutes of instruction and 30 minutes of practice ice. Drop in Freestyle cards will not be given as we have included practice time into the class this year.
ISI Recreational Competitions Class
Designed for Alpha - Gamma-Delta Skaters this exciting new class is designed to introduce skaters to the exciting world of recreational figure skating competitions. Skater will receive a personalized program to music, to use at an upcoming ISI Competition. ISI membership ($13) required for participation in competitions is not included.
ISI Testing
Skills taught during classes at the Lou & Gib Reese Ice Arena prepare skaters to earn the ISI nationally recognized testing badges. Skaters will receive a test recommendation (and future class recommendation) card from their class instructors when they are ready to pass the test. Tests will be held in a fun atmosphere, and will include an awards presentation at the conclusion of the test session. Testing fees are $5.00, and include the badge. ISI membership ($13) is also required and is not included. Pre-registration and payment is required.
