Designed for the beginning youth hockey skater ages 5 and older. Skaters will learn the fundamentals of skating forward and stopping. Skaters will be introduced to the puck and participate in activities designed to develop the love for the game. Elbow pads, shin/knee pads, and helmet are required or can be rented upon request. This class is open to all girls and boys. This is the class to attend to “find out” if your child would like to play the game.
BECOME A FUTURE GENERAL
Our Learn to Play Hockey program provides beginning hockey players with the skating foundation necessary to play the game. The following classes have been designed to provide the minimum basic skating instruction so that your child can safely and successfully participate on an ice hockey team. All classes are taught by professionally trained and certified instructors, all of whom share their passion for the sport of Hockey with your child.
- Private First Class:
This class provides a basic introduction to skating, providing the foundation for balance, forward and ackward movement and beginning stops.
- Corporal:
Once a skater has passed the requirements for Private first Class, the skater will learn the fundamentals of forward skating and stopping.
- Sergeant:
Once the skater has passed required elements for Corporal Level, the skater will learn the fundamentals of backward skating, advanced stopping and turning.

Learn to Play Hockey players will be promoted to NIHA (Newark Ice Hockey Association) Hockey Players as their ability allows them. All Future Generals will be placed in classes based on skills and ability, if a player progresses faster then his/her class we will continually move them up to the level of their ability. The Instructors and the Skating Director of the Lou & Gib Reese Ice Arena and the NIHA Hockey Director will make this determination together. As always we will promote players as quickly as possible so that they might have the opportunity to participant in the current years hockey season. Individuals skills incorporate proper techniques and body mechanics for stickhandling, passing and shooting. Classes are offered for both youth and adult. Player selected for advancement during a season will only have to pay pro rated fees to join a team.
